Help tackling home repairs

There’s never a good time for unexpected repairs, but issues that crop up in the winter often can’t wait. PHDC can help. Just follow these steps.

Step #1: Decide whether the problem is big or small

Big problems include things like water leaks that cause the ceiling to collapse, or exposed cables that put you at risk of electric shock.

The nonprofit PHDC’s Basic Systems Repair Program (BSRP) helps eligible homeowners tackle complex and dangerous problems that pose an immediate risk to your health or safety. Smaller, nonurgent home repairs don’t qualify.

BSRP performs free repairs for the following emergencies:

  • Electrical
  • Heating
  • Plumbing
  • Limited structural and carpentry repairs
  • Roofing

BSRP also responds to emergencies caused by many types of leaks, including:

  • Sewer lines
  • Water service lines
  • Large roof leaks

Step #2: Check if you qualify

You’ll need to meet certain income guidelines. Find the full list of eligibility requirements at phdcphila.org by clicking on Residents and then Basic System Repair Program.

Step #3: Apply for emergency repair services

If you qualify, you can call 215-448-2160 (TTY: 215-448-2184), or go to phdcphila.org to submit an application online by clicking on Residents, then Basic System Repair Program, and then Apply.

Top tips to stay safe from winter’s chill

Cold temps are more than uncomfortable.  They can be dangerous for older adults. Follow these tips from the National Institute on Aging:

  • Talk to your doctor. Many medications and health conditions affect body heat and can make it harder to stay warm. Ask what specific precautions you should take.

  • Know the signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a medical emergency. Early signs include cold feet and hands, slowed speech, pale skin, puffy face, and confusion.

  • Prep your home. Stock up on salt or sand to keep ice from building up on your sidewalks and steps. Be sure you have sturdy, nonslip footwear for your daily outings.

  • Get help from other organizations. Eligible homeowners can benefit from programs like the Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. This federally funded program provides home heating assistance and crisis grants to low-income Pennsylvanians. Learn more at https://www.compass.dhs.pa.gov/home/ or by calling 866-857-7095.
